The Names You Know

Bulldog Legends

Porter “Port” Robertson

Class of the 1930s · Oklahoma

Raised in Edmond and an All-American at Oklahoma in 1935. He came home from World War II with a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart from the Normandy invasion, took over a Sooner program that had not fielded a team since 1941, and won national championships in 1951, 1952 and 1957. He coached the United States to three gold medals at the 1960 Olympics in Rome. OU's wrestling center carries his name.

Gary Breece

State Champion 1968 · Oklahoma

Won at 98 pounds for the Bulldogs in 1968, then became the first Sooner wrestler ever to earn four All-America honors. He closed his career with the 1974 NCAA title at 118 pounds, a 3–2 decision that helped deliver Oklahoma's last team championship.

T.J. Jaworsky

Four-Time State Champion 1987–1990 · North Carolina

Four Oklahoma titles and a 110–2 high school record. He transferred from Oklahoma State to North Carolina and won three straight NCAA championships at 134 pounds. His senior season finished 38–0, and he became the first wrestler ever to receive the Dan Hodge Award — the sport's Heisman.

Johny Hendricks

Three-Time State Champion 2000–2002 · Oklahoma State

Finished high school 101–5 with three state titles and two Junior National freestyle championships. At Oklahoma State he was a four-time All-American and won back-to-back NCAA titles at 165 pounds in 2005 and 2006. He later became UFC Welterweight Champion.

State Placers

These records were assembled from the program's own files and cover 1933 through 2025. A few years are still incomplete, and a handful of names and dates appear differently across sources. If you wrestled here, or you know someone who did, and something is missing or wrong — please get in touch so we can fix it.
